Weird and Wonderful America
Hi ho! Hi ho! It’s off to America we go! The countdown is on…. And, you can see on this postcard I found somewhere on the googleuniverse – it’s a pretty big place – and to demonstrate the true diversity, here’s a collection of a few favourites I’ve discovered over the years…
They’re far lesser-known popular American culture ‘thingies’ that you wish never saw or can’t believe things like this exist in the world.
This ‘real’ television news story featured the wonderful Miss Sweet Brown who later became a modern day hit with ‘ain’t nobody got time for that’ – here she is starring as a local celebrity for a dentist. (It truly is the land of Hopes and Dreams)
This one I can’t help but share – it’s similar to Miss Brown, and still as hilarious. I think ‘where do they get these people from’.. and then I remember that it’s America.
I’m from New Jersey and well, it’s a pretty ‘different’ place too. We’ve got what’s called the “Jersey Devil” – it torments the people of the Pine Barrens in South Jersey and it tormented the bejeusus out of me what I was a kid! Well, not personally…. just mentally. I made sure not to stray too far just so I didn’t get eaten by this thing.
I remember this photo from inside the Jersey Devil book that we had when I was little. I would thumb though the pictures and would break out into a sweat just thinking of this thing. (Probably some kind of extreme parenting of the 80’s – it worked!)
Its an interesting read – unless you’re a seven year old like I was.. and then it’s just horrifying when trying to sleep at night. If you’re after more info on the devil – click here.
On a much lighter note, here’s a true classic…
This is an ‘actual’ TV ad for Chuck Testa Taxidermy – no seriously, this is really the actual ad.
Gieco – an oldie but a goodie – I remember being glued to the TV screen when this first made television when I was back in high school! Brilliant ad!
