The Mongol Derby

Holy shit.

I’m just gotta cut straight to it: 22CD718E-E76B-431E-B2D7-76CA09EF302F.png

This morning I got an e mail from The Adventurists offering me one spot out of 40 to take part in this year’s Mongol Derby.  At 1,000 kilometers across the landscapes of Mongolia, it’s the toughest horse race in the world.

Yep.  I’m shitting myself and not because of the race but because I now have a massive lifestyle change to pull off this epic adventure.

For those who are wondering, I was a pretty good horseback rider back in my younger years.  I also participated on the Equine team when I was at Graduate school a few years ago.  The good thing is, I’ve got muscle memory – riding a horse is like riding a bike that’s got a brain.

Over the next year, I’ll be harnessing a massive lifestyle change from exercise, to diet to times I’ll be spending down on a farm.  I need to build up those seat muscles, and let’s be honest – my confidence.

This will be one hell of an epic journey even before it starts!

Everything will be posted here on and I will also be live-Tweeting progress as well as videos on Twitter as it all happens.  If you have questions, please ask… if you’ve suggestions, please share and if you’ve got tips, send them my way as well!

This wont be easy… and that’s the thing – it’s not supposed to. I can tell you this right now that the highs are gonna be amazing but I’m not looking forward to the lows.  Nobody ever does… but we gotta take the good with the bad.

If you want to see what the heck I signed up for, have a look at this webpage. It’s pretty epic and scary – but that’s why I like it.

I never thought I’d ever be in a horse race in Mongolia – you just don’t think about those things – but it’s here and it’s happening… and I’m kinda shitting myself… but in a very good way!

I leave you with my most precious best friend that I ever had. This is Bandit – he was my first horse – my best friend and who got me into going on adventures.  I owe Bandit a lot. He saved me in a lot of ways.  This is a photo of Bandit and I from the Halloween Horse Show back in the 90’s.  We won first that year because my mom took the old Halloween costumes and sewed them together.  9482BD57-51B3-4EF4-AFED-06D3902B235B.jpeg

  1. Wow, that is really quite something! Congratulations and all the best! I’m very much looking forward to your posts on that subject!

(My daughter is totally horse-crazy and was just found caressing the picture of Bandit up there in your text, by the way. LOL!)
